Mozilla Posts Official Call for Accessibility Developer for Android Browser
We heard some initial comments about Mozilla's desire to make their Android browser experience accessible, and now we've seen an official solicitation for interested developers to apply. If you're looking for a job in the programming and accessibility fields, this may be the right one for you. According to the post bby David Bolter, "Pretty soon we'll work to provide an enjoyable eyes-free experience with Mobile Firefox on Android. We'll need to refactor our accessibility engine for out of process content. We'll need to help design and drive the next web and desktop accessibility APIs. We'll help define speech on the web. A session from this year's South by Southwest conference has given us a clue of what to expect in the next version of Android from an accessibility perspective. Version 3.0 of the operating system, scheduled for released later this year, will include built-in support for the web browser including embedded web views. The session, entitled "Inclusive Mobility - Making Mobile Apps Accessible" was led by Becky Gibson, a Web Accessibility Architect at IBM. Google's Charles Chen, a developer with the Eyes-free project, also was in attendance to provide the company's perspective on mobile apps. Aside from this news, the session served as a tool to educate developers on the importance of including accessibility in their software, regardless of platform. Here's one view from an attendee, Nick Fotis who says, "The session was so powerful I'll be sure consider users of varying needs on future projects." There's more accessibility sessions scheduled for the conference, and we've linked to the list from this post.

Levelstar, the company known largely for the development of the Icon, is reportedly coming to CSUN with something new. A press release posted to Pratik Patel's blog appears to talk of an official upcoming product release from the company, to be debuted at CSUN. The Orion is an Android-based notetaker with at least one model including an 18-cell display and another which just voice output. Levelstart is also partnering with the American Printing House for the Blind and using text-to-speech from Ivona Software in the new device. Both the NFB and ACB gave consultation on the device, scheduled for release in the next few months. We were unable to find anything on Levelstar's website as of yet, but will certainly learn more at CSUN and report back.
